PS: My 'fall out of seat' moment recently was... hearing The Pogues as the background music for a f*cking Cadillac commercial during the Oscars! WTF!? That HAS to be a sign of the End of Days or something.

All of our hero's sell out in the end eh?

The words "Cadillac" (think luxury car) and "The Pogues" (think cool but scruffy band) don't exactly fit together for me either though (lol)

The Decemberists: The Crane Wife (everyone loooves this record, but I like it anyway)...

Just picked this up as well the other day. First impressions are OK, not great, but need a few more listens.

I also purchased 'The Good, The Bad & The Queen' Damon Albarn's new project (think Blur/Gorillaz). Has a lot of potential. After a few listens I'm getting hooked.

Loads of excellent stuff on there: singles from more or less legendary bands like Radio Birdman, The Triffids, The Saints, The Riptides, Sekret Sekret, Died Pretty and of course Nick Cave's Birthday Party.

Wonderful stuff for proud Ozzies and other nutters.

You know its funny, I have heard of the bands but never really heard much of their stuff apart from maybe Nick Cave's BP and I'm an Aussie AND a nutter :D

These groups do all have legendary names in this country though. You've given me the excuse to pay more attention and hunt these down for a listen. Thanks mate.

Saints. A few years ago I emailed them asking if I could buy a band t-shirt. They replied, saying something along the lines of 'We don't really produce many t-shirts, we think it's a bit commercialised and corny. But send us your address and we'll see what we can do." Two weeks later I had a brand new tour t-shirt, delivered via airmail... I think Bailey's new Saints stuff is brilliant, non-pretentious rock and roll, but the punk stuff has aged. His solo stuff is vastly underrated, too.

Also, a nice little tribute to Herman Brood on Black Francis' new 'leaked' album Bluefinger. He's touring Europe next month; the bastard didn't do any solo stuff here when the Pixies were here in April.

I absolutely must put the boot in for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. They out did themselves this year. 3 days for the first time. Rage Against The Machine , RHCP ,Bjork, Sonic Youth, Placebo, Kings of Leon, Arcade Fire , Arctic Moneys ,Interpol ,The Jesus and Mary Chain . And these were just the" Headliners" over the three days. A beautiful setting in the Coachella Valley of So. Cal . The beauty of Joshua Tree National Park 20 minutes away. AMAZING!!! If anyone has the itch to go next year , do it . You'll not regret going . You'll only regret not going sooner. Only Ajax's umpteenth screw up of the season could cast a small damper on such an amazing music festival weekend .

More great music from Down Under...

Once every few years I go through a 'Flying Nun phase'. Flying Nun is New Zealand's finest record label, from the remote university town of Dunedin. I believe they still exist, but I particularly love the melodic indie pop they released around 1990. The Chills are probably their best known band, but I also love The Verlaines, The Clean, Sneaky Feelings, Straightjacket Fits and The Bats, for example.

A few days ago I put a handful of Chills and Clean albums on my iPod, plus three wonderful label compilations: Tuatara (1986), In Love With These Times (1990) and Pink Flying Saucers Over The Southern Alps (1991).

According to the myth, Flying Nun bands sound the way they sound because Dunedin is such a remote, tiny place: these bands hardly ever saw other bands play (only other bands from Dunedin), they couldn't get the state-of-the-art equipment and had absolutely no idea how to sound like 'famous' bands or even how to write a song. They just did things the way they thought was right and developed a very distinct 'Dunedin sound', which is why a band like The Chills sounds so typically naive and weird.

Myth or the truth - I absolutely love some of that stuff (not everything, though). Pure 'Kiwi pop' brilliance.

Bailter Space is my favourite band on the Flying Nun roster. First heard them performing live on Nozems A Gogo (a dutch VPRO radio show) in the early nineties. They literally blew me away with their noise explosions. Great stuff.

Maybe it's the pending Pearl Jam tour of Europe ( and at Lollapalooza in Chicago Aug 5) that had me reminiscing about the Seattle scene , but I pulled my Gits cds recently. HOLY SHIT. What an amazing sound. Fuckin' tragic that the murder of Mia Zapata cut way too short the time The Gits were producing great music. Enter The Conquering Chicken is an amazing cd. Ditto Seafish Louisvile . "Second Skin " from Seafish never ceases to give me gooseflesh .

Yeah, they're playing a huge open air show at Nijmegen's Goffert Park on 28 June. It's actually a kind of 'mini festival' called Pearl Jam in the Park, with Incubus, Kings Of Leon and Perry Farrell's Satellite Party as the support acts.

I'll be there. Naturally.

There is no denial: prices for concert tickets have gone through the roof in recent years. Everywhere.

Having said that: 49 euros for a mini festival with Incubus and Pearl Jam (two 'arena fillers')... That's not that terrible, I would say. A ticket for the Rolling Stones will cost 100 euros or so. And Neil Young wanted 89 euros for an acoustic solo gig.

Lou Reed performing Berlin? 56 to 69 euros.
George Michael at the Amsterdam ArenA? Between 49 and 85.

If a guy like Damien Rice can ask between 36 and 42 euros for a show with a support act no-one ever heard of, then 49 euros for Pearl Jam, Incubus, Kings Of Leon and Perry Farrell doesn't seem that outrageous...

So this weekend marks the release of the new CD from my favourite artist Ryan Adams (hell its another year, so it must be time for him to release a new one) and from what I have heard so far, it is easily his most consistent piece since Gold.

The album actually sounds as though it has been trimmed and removed of any clutter...amazing what stopping drugs can do to someone. Apparently he has now been 'clean' for over a year.

Will post more after the release and can listen to the CD in full (and not just samples, or live bootlegs), but there are some stunning songs to come...

I only bought Morning View and I really liked it. I also know some nice songs from their previous albums. I wanted to buy "A Crow Left To The Murder" but it was difficult to find in the French countryside and finally, I kinda forgot about that band. Would have like to see them live though.
I would have liked to see PJ too, it would have been a good occasion to really discover them as I must admit I never really listened them (let's say you have to make choices sometimes...).
But it won't be for this time, more because of the date than the price (I know this is not that expensive as stated by Menno - Incubus alone in Paris is already 40€ btw - but I was expecting naively something a bit cheaper for a midweek minifestival). But don't forget that for that price, you can easily get 2 tickets for an Ajax game, which is a bit more interesting...

These concerts are amazing, esp some early ones before Heartbreaker came out. Bloody hell I remember the days where bootlegs sounded so poor. Nearly all these are as good as official recordings.

I don't normally buy film soundtracks but I saw the South African film Tsotsi on DVD the other week - really good film and a great soundtrack of modern SA music mainly by a SA singer called Zola singing in local Xhosa language.

A really moving CD this, had trouble finding it in the shops but got it on Ebay from Australia eventually! I suspect I'm the only one on here listening to this but if you get a chance, give it a try.

Funny you should say that. I think this album has a very Neil Young feel to a lot of the tracks. Although if I had to pick, I think RA would win slightly on the vocals.

I'm looking forward to him touring whenever that maybe again here. Last few times he's been off his face, but from all reports he's much more focused, off the booze and drugs (great article from the new york times how he nearly died).

Its about time too. One of the greatest singer/songwriters of our generation could have gone down the gurgler. Here's hoping he keeps it up.

Its a pretty interesting read actually. Sort of helps explain his antics in the past, and hopefully where he is headed in the future.
