EDIT: Ajax are 4-1-7 all time against Madrid. Ajax were drawn with Madrid in the Group stages of three straight CL competitions starting with the 2010-11 matches and lost all six times.

Maybe the best draw we could get! Even if Porto is of a smaller caliber, they play a PSV type of game and could surprise us. Plus the fact that playing against Real, will get everyone on alert and giving their best!

Pretty happy with the draw. It would be sweet to beat Madrid - however my dislike of them is less nowadays compared to the OPEC Clubs.

Madrid has generally been on a downward trajectory over the past few years. Having Ronaldo and Zidane for the last 3 years helped them win 3 CLs. I know I'm oversimplifying it, but I truly believe having those 2 focused the team.

Did you already think about flighing off to Madrid around 5 March, work a few days from that location and visit this match in Bernabeu also?

Actually not a terrible idea. I would love coming for the home match in Amsterdam more than the away game in Madrid.

Incidentally, my boss is a huge Athleti fan from Madrid. He was the starting keeper in their youth team back in the day. I'll see if I can come up with some 'work trip' .

Haha well there are (almost always) constructions like this possible.
And when that other club in Madrid get's eliminated by our team for sure you score credits with your Atleti boss.

As this will be a match on a Tuesday my plan is to arrive in Madrid already in the weekend, it's always fun to visit some activities in or nearby the stadium of either Rayo Vallecano or Atletico Madrid. You know for sure that many fans of these clubs will cheer for the underdog when Ajax is playing their city rival.

One thing we need to think about here.,

This CL season, Ajax has put out 3 of the 4 most dominant sides in Europe over the last 5-6 years: Bayern, Real and now Juventus.

The top players at all 3 are aging fast and all 3 need major player revolutions.

The losses to Ajax may well promote a major turnover of players in all 3 sides this summer and next. This could result in a more wide open CL over the next couple of years. If Ajax can somehow keep the bulk of their players and sell only a couple a year, they could well be in the mix for 2-3 more seasons before the player turnover at the 3 giants is complete.

And they still may get a shot at the 4th giant, Barca.


I don't know what we have to do to keep these guys for the next 3 years. Maybe that's the pact they sign? Van Der Sar and Overmars could give them bonuses linked to the money which we make in the CL.
