Yes, I did. I would have re-posted the replies here too, had there been any information in them. There were two or three replies, but none of 'em contained the answer to neilg's question. One basically said 'I don't know' and another one basically said 'you're asking this in the wrong zone'...

I've just bought this book "50 Years of the European Cup and Champions League" by Keir Radnedge. A really great book with loads of good pictures and an intersting little story from 1972.

It's about the time when Rinus Michels left for Barcelona and Stefan Kovacs arrived as manager. Apparetly the players were a bit put out that Michels had gone. "Kovacs was a scarcely known Romanian whose short grey hair and squat build marked him out as anything but a football man.

"How do you like the length of our hair?" the players asked him on his first day, ready to challenge some stereotypically authoritarian East European response. "I've been employed as a football coach not a hairdresser," Kovacs told them sensing the tension and knowing there was more to come.

Kovacs let the staff run the first training sessions while he observed from the touchline. Suddenly, out of a group of players, a football was fizzed directly at Kovacs at around knee height. He raised his right foot, bought the ball down smoothly out of its flight, trapped it and then knocked it back. No-one taunted him again after that"

This really is a great book. Keir Radnedge is a very well respected football journalist with "World Soccer" magazine in Britain amongst others.

I remember reading that story; can't recall if it was from 'johan Cruijff superstar'. Anyway, if memory serves me correct, the player attributed with striking the ball towards Kovacs was Piet Keizer.Good thing nobody tried that with Koeman on his first day as coach.

L'Equipe Magazine asked this question: "What was the best European game ever?" Many European journalists voted, and the winner was... Ajax Amsterdam - Bayern Munchen, 1973.
I've got this game on DVD, given to me by a friend some years ago. The quality is still very good ! Not sure where my friend got it from, but it is avaialable here: http://www.hometown.aol.com/soccerworldp/index.html

I warn you, the shocking contrast between Ajax then and Ajax now is very disturbing...

Only on Ajax USA we have the privilege to wish you a great 2005 and a great 1991.

;)

Edit: An old Dutch football tradition is the annual friendly on New Year's Day between Royal HFC (Holland's oldest football club, currently playing in the Second Class of amateur football) and a the 'Old Internationals' team. It was played for the 73rd time today and the former Oranje stars won by the score of 4-1. Goals were scored by Pieter Huistra and former Ajacieden Bryan Roy, Michel Kreek and Richard Witschge. It was the 40th win for 'Old Oranje'. Royal HFC won 21 times and there were 12 draws.

At the home ground of the Royal HFC in Haarlem. Very low key amateur ground.

For years I've been planning to go to this game once, but for some reason I never have much energy on January 1st... :D

Come on Ave, haven't you learnt your lesson already ?

It's not about a SYSTEM, it's about how you play.

<Insert Spartak Moskow references, and some journalist bullshit about 442 and 433>

;)

OH I almost forgot :

Here's mine :

Van Der Sar

Cruyff - Bergkamp

Revealing the Holy Prophecy : Bergkamp and Cryuff in the same team at the same time will stop time, resulting in an easy 80 - 0 victory in any game.

I win.

Does that still work with a 36 year old Bergkamp and a 60 year old Cruijff? Or would that only be 40-0?

Well honestly, I do think that Bergkamp has more talent in one of his booger than our whole current team.... So I guess that could work.
