Ko,

Thanks for the link. Haven't been on here for a while but Ajaxtalk is always worth a look to see something new and fascinating.

BBC Late Kick Off is shown insanely late for a Monday (?) night and also has different regional versions (this looks like the Yorkshire/Lancashire version) so I hadn't seen it before.

A little slow on the draw - we've been out of town and off the grid - but amen.

I found this little gem of a video on the Guardian today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWugIE9-xQU#t=7m00s. Check out who makes their Ajax debut at 7:00.

Nice one. Commentator says: "Witschge is taken off and is replaced by, er... Dennis Bergkamp. Everybody here is thinking: who?"

Also interesting that van Basten wasn't in the lineup. I wonder if he was injured that day.

I managed to get a DVD copy of the 2000-2001 season in review.

I was wondering if anyone who's longer in the tooth could tell me what was the go with Richard Knopper?
He was our #10 and skippered the team a few times.
Then he fell out of favour?

Not being a Durch speaker, it's hard to understand the commentary... .

Also what was the problem with Co and Aaron Winter?

p.s. Once again, I miss Richard Witschge so very much... .

Injured for most of the next season and he never played at his old level again imo.

I thought it was because Raffie came into the first squad that year...

Hmm I have the 2000-2001 edition and watched in about 14 times. Perhaps we can help each other with some sort of swapping exchange? I don't have this one on dvd but on good old video tape.

This is probably the appropriate thread for this...

The 'Sjaak Swart 75' tribute game at the Olympic Stadium is on YouTube. In full. Of course you're not going to watch the full game (promise me you're not), but the footage the first minutes (arrival at the stadium, dressing room footage) are very nice indeed and you might want to look up some of the goals.

It was a very nice evening.

Here is a really cool resource on Ajax history: http://www.worldfootball.net/teams/afc-ajax/ It looks like they have done a lot of work over the summer to increase the amount of data on the site. It's been there for some years but only had rosters and game scores. Now you can click on match scores and get the starting lineups, goal scorers, and Yellow/Red cards (not sure how many seasons this feature goes back to but all seasons starting in 2000 seem to have it). Lots of fun to go back and see how Zlatan, Raffie, Wesley, and others did in Ajax squads.

not sure if this is the right place or not.... but FourFourTwo magazine puts us as the best team ever. Our champions cup winning teams of the 70's is better than any other of any other time, apparently.. :ajaxsmiley.gif:

Studio Voetbal is showing old matches of World Championships in the running up to Brazil next year. They started in 74. Recently with the passing of Gerrie Mühren, they showed clips from the 70's again.
Usually the fragments last no more than a minute, most of the times less, but it is enough to be reminded that those guys - as they were then - would easily win every match in the eredivisie now and would stand a good fighting chance in the CL if they were beamed up from the 70's to today.

Don't underestimate the fysical strenght you need nowadays. If I look at clips from the 70's, everybody is standing still and awaiting. But sure enough, those guys knew how to handle a football.

They would adapt to it within two games.
And physical strenght? Boilesen would shit in his pants when he would have to consider players like Suurbier or Neeskens.

That would be their only problem: they would break records in reds and yellows in current football. :-)

Very nice video on UEFA.com: Johan Cruijff on the European Cup final of 1972, Ajax vs Inter in Rotterdam.

Watch it.

Happy 20th birthday to the last Champion league win! :ajaxscarf.gif:

Wonder if it's possible ever again to repeat that achievement? Well lots of good youngsters coming through every year. That's something to be proud of. Not sure I would even want to see us winning anything with sugar daddy money.
