Jersey numbers 2005-2006
Just read the Ajax.nl report of the first training. The jersey numbers of the 22 players who were there today are also listed in it!
1. Maarten Stekelenburg
3. Zdenek Grygera
4. John Heitinga
5. Julien Escudé
6. Tomás Galásek
7. Mauro Rosales
10. Steven Pienaar
12. Hans Vonk
14. Markus Rosenberg
15. Thomas Vermaelen
16. Nigel de Jong
17. Yannis Anastasiou
18. Wesley Sneijder
20. Daniël de Ridder
21. Olaf Lindenbergh
22. Rasmus Lindgren
23. Tom de Mul
25. Anthony Obodai
26. Bogdan Lobont
27. Edgar Manucharyan
28. Nourdin Boukhari
29. Nicolae Mitea
The ones who were absent today are not listed just yet. A few thoughts...
* Last season Bogdan Lobont had #1; now it's Maarten Stekelenburg. Draw your conclusions.
* Hatem Trabelsi will, no doubt, keep #2
* Markus Rosenberg has the legendary 'Cruyff number'; Charisteas will probably keep #9
* Julien Escudé has #5 from now on. Does that mean Blind will use him as a left fullback more frequently...? I think so.
* Zdenek Grygera's reward for a great season: the #3 jersey.
* To my surprise Blind has given Steven Pienaar the #10 jersey, and not Wesley Sneijder. Fair enough, but it makes me cynical: Pienaar must be the only #10 in Europe who - for some reason - is deemed not good enough for the same salary as, say, the #4 of the squad. I mean, WTF? #10 is a prestigious jersey. Offer the guy a decent salary and he will renew his deal!!
* Seems like Maxwell will get #8 (left midfield, normally).
* What about Ryan Babel...? #11...? Probably so.
* Lobont now has #26, which was Maduro's number last year. He will get a lower number this season, but probably not lower than 12.

Even so, I assume I'm safe enough sticking with no 17 for my next seasons shirt :cheer: :headbang: :cheer:Kowalczyk schreef:Forget about all of the above...
There pictures of the press presentation of the new players on Ajax.nl and Rosenberg is holding a jersey with #24. During training he wore #14. Seems like the list of jersey numbers based on this morning's training session doesn't mean too much...

Why isn't this number 'retired' , like they do in America?Kowalczyk schreef: 14. Markus Rosenberg

It's a strange day when I say, 'we should do it like America', but surely the recognition is deserved.
Re: Jersey numbers 2005-2006
Ironically, the first ever 'retired number' was the Yankees' Lou Gehrig who retired from the game of baseball on July 4th (oh irony) 1939 after having been diagnosed with MND - which was later to be known as 'Lou Gehrig's disease'.Frans schreef:Why isn't this number 'retired' , like they do in America?Kowalczyk schreef: 14. Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a term used to cover a number of illnesses of the motor neurone. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA), Progressive Bulbar Palsy (PBP) and Progressive Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) are all types of MND. MND is the term used internationally while ALS is often used in the United States (where it is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease) to cover all forms of MND.

And why is that mister ? Is basic anti-americanism THAT trendy nowadays ?Frans schreef: It's a strange day when I say, 'we should do it like America'

it's great that pienaar is number 10 and sneijder gets the cold shoulder
that made my day
But Bogdan Lobont number 26? :redcard: Woudln't it have been easier to keep the same keeper numbers and play whoever who is in form in goal? There's no need to rub Lobont's nose in the shit. He's been trampled on enough as it is.

After such a good season Heitinga deserves the n°4.Kowalczyk schreef:Okay, now they're official! Here you go:

That's what I was thinking... Van Eijden said last week that all three goalkeepers will start the pre-season campaign with a clean sheet and that everything is open as far as the position of first goalie is concerned.bryan schreef:But Bogdan Lobont number 26? :redcard: Woudln't it have been easier to keep the same keeper numbers and play whoever who is in form in goal? That sounds a bit silly and hypocritical now (but then: doesn't everything Van Eijden says sound a bit silly and hypocritical...?).
'Clean sheet' and 'everything is open'... Come on. Wanna bet?? I think Stekelenburg will win this 'open' battle...

Of course I am. I mean, with all the Frenchie-Frog patriotism apart (OK, you know I'm lying ;) ), Escudé's been great last season. His duo with Grygera was one of last year's only satisfaction with Maduro and Trabelsi. And now he'll be n°5 and Blind's already talking about Julien as a "high-quality replacement for LB" (read leak-filler).Kowalczyk schreef:Are you taking the piss...?Carcajou schreef:After such a good season Heitinga deserves the n°4.

In the meantime Johnny Boy was ...... average to say the best and he's now the n°4. I know numbers are just numbers, but ..... you know....

For your information: I just deleted that post by FC Utreg. As a matter of fact, it was her second post I deleted in a few days' time. The previous ones had something to do with Jews.Carcajou schreef:I always knew poetry was what was lacking on these boards. I'm afraid it's time for a warning here: FC Utreg, you are more than welcome to post in the English Zones of Ajax Talk, but posts like that will not de tolerated. I don't want to see any more of that crap from you, is that clear? Just behave yourself.
Consider yourself yellow carded.
