FdB was quoted in de Telegraaf that it was not a penalty on van der Wiel but should have been a free kick. I don't think he saw the replay as it looked like Mertens was in the box...

The way I saw it, the initial contact that could have been considered obstruction, happened just outside of the box. If the referee called that, then it was a foul but not a penalty. After the player was in the box, vdw reached in with his right leg and made contact with the attacker's left foot around the ankle area. So, if the referee had let the "obstruction" call go, and called the foul for bringing the attacker down after he was in the box, then obviously it was a deserved penalty.

No doubt in my mind: definitely a penalty. From memory that goal was caused by Janssen's horrible pass in the middle of the park which allowed a quick counter, leaving van der Wiel 1 vs. 1...

It's definitely a foul by Van der Wiel, but it's no penalty. Obstruction means the referee should give a free kick in the penalty box and PSV is permitted to take this free kick indirectly. These are the rules of Football. I'm afraid referee Kuipers does not know them all...

I've watched the replay several times and it's one of those 50-50 decisions as to whether it should be a penalty or a free kick. If we were not so poor on the ball in the midfield, PSV would not have had either goal scoring opportunity. I'm more worried that FdB still hasn't fixed the midfield problem.

We fought hard and caught up with Philips twice. Not a bad game. However, it's clear that our left wing is much better than our right wing. FdB should consider Ozbiliz.
