His father's last name is Dil. So when he was coming through the youth ranks at Haarlem he was actually knows as 'Ruud Dil'. The manager of Haarlem at the time (Barry Hughes) told the little prodigy he needed a 'flashier' name to really catch the eye of the 'Top 3'. He therefore adopted his mother's last name 'Gullit.'


And Ruud Gullit was (re)born

Actually, I stand corrected:

Ruud's father's name is George Gullit. He had, though, never been married to Ruud's mother, Ria Dil. Ruud therefore took on the last name Dil.

But Gullit's real first name is Rudy, I happen to know. (I scanned his cousin at the OLVG about 15 year ago, and he told me.).

But when he was married his current wife, he didn't use either Gullit or Dil - it was Rudy Somethingelse, I've forgotten now. So he has a third family name.

Gee, I guess in light of the cowardly collapse of the home side, authorities have decided to rename Feyenoord's home stadium:

"Police arrested 43 people as seven officers were injured in violent riots around Rotterdam's football stadium, De Kip, on Sunday as Amsterdam club Ajax defeated home team Feyenoord 3-2 on Sunday."

Full credit to the authorities for making the arrests (Sunday) on the same day as the game (Sunday).
