A glorious era for football in Argentina came to an end last week when Hugo Tocalli resigned as co-ordinator of the country's youth sides.

Tocalli had been involved in the process since 1994, first as assistant to Jose Pekerman, then stepping up after Pekerman took over the senior side.
In these 13 years Argentina won five out of seven World Youth Cups - tournaments for players of 20 and under.
It is a superb track record, made all the more remarkable by two facts.
Firstly winning titles was never the primary objective, and secondly all the silverware does not even come close to explaining the achievements of the Pekerman-Tocalli project.
The success story starts with an idea, as simple as it was brilliant. In 1994 Jose Pekerman was a surprise choice to take over Argentina's youth sides.
But he was given the post because he had a clear vision of what the future would bring.
The globalisation of football meant that Argentina's players were inevitably going to be moving abroad at an ever younger age.
Pekerman and Tocalli consistently kept faith with the most positive aspects of Argentine football identity
In this context the only way to secure them for the future of Argentine football was through the youth sides.
Backed up by his friend Tocalli, Pekerman scoured the country for young talent, groomed it and gave it an intensive course in the identity of Argentine football.
The list of players who have come up through the ranks of the Pekerman-Tocalli process is quite remarkable.
It includes almost the entire current senior squad, with such top players and future hopes as Riquelme, Gago, Mascherano, Milito, Cambiasso, Messi, Tevez, Aguero and Saviola.
This is the proof of the success of the project - there would be not the slightest point in winning youth titles if the players did not subsequently prove their worth at senior level.
Youth work is much more about learning, improving and picking up experience than it is about accumulating titles.
And there are also the fundamental questions of how the youth titles were won, and of what type of player they have been grooming for the senior side.
It is here that football owes Argentina, and Pekerman and Tocalli in particular - a sizeable debt.

The rush towards ever greater athleticism threatens to transform football into a game for giants - bigger and stronger than ever before, running faster in order to crash into each other as soon as possible.
But Pekerman and Tocalli consistently kept faith with the most positive aspects of Argentine football identity - the idea that the game can be wonderfully interpreted by skilful little players, who use their talent and low centre of gravity to avoid the challenges and keep the ball moving.
In recent times Argentina have not won the senior titles to go with those World Youth Cup wins.
Even so, the artistic, thoughtful football they played in last year's World Cup and this year's Copa America has stood out and won the admiration of neutrals all around the planet.
This can be traced directly back to the work started by Pekerman and Tocalli in 1994.
And now their era comes to a close, appropriately enough, on a point of principle.
Tocalli was offered a new contract to continue in his post as head of Argentina's youth sides. It was a position he very much wanted to retain.
But no new contract was offered to his assistant, Miguel Angel Tojo, so in solidarity Tocalli stepped down - a noble and fitting end to a project that was as inspirational as it was successful.

Luciano Leguizamón heeft zich een berg ellende op de hals gehaald door na het rustsignaal op het veld shirtje te ruilen met Juan Sebastián Verón in de derby tegen Estudiantes. De spits van Gimnasia La Plata is uit de selectie gezet en wordt bewaakt.
De aanhang van Gimnasia reageerde furieus toen Leguizamón de grote vedette van de aartsrivaal bleek te bewonderen. Coach Julio Falcioni zag zich genoodzaakt hem te wisselen in de tweede helft.
'De passie van de fans heeft het gewonnen van de rede', probeerde Gimnasia-voorzitter Juan José Muñoz de gespannen stemming te sussen. 'Luciano heeft afgedaan bij de aanhang, ook al was hij zich niet bewust van de lading van zijn actie. Het moet eerst allemaal maar eens bezinken. Daarna is het tijd om zich te verontschuldigen.'
Leguizamón heeft al verklaard dat het hem niet om het shirt van Estudiantes ging, maar om het feit dat Verón zijn idool is. Bovendien had Verón hem juist om zíjn shirt gevraagd, vooraf al.
'Hij wilde mijn shirt voor iemand die hij kende die juist vanwege míj fan was geworden van Gimnasia. Ik heb gezegd dat ik dat na de wedstrijd wel wilde, maar hij gaf me de zijne al in de rust', aldus Leguizamón.
Verón benadrukte dat alle commotie het Argentijnse voetbal, dat al bol staat van geweld en bedreigingen, geen goed doet. 'Er is te veel hysterie in het voetbal', meent Verón. 'Dit helpt niet om het geweld een halt toe te roepen. Het is te gek voor woorden, men grijpt dit voorval aan om een nederlaag te wreken.'
Estudiantes won met 1-0 van Gimnasia, dat met tien man eindigde. 'Maar dat kwam niet omdat Luciano shirtje met mij heeft geruild', verzekerde de 32-jarige middenvelder en 63-voudige international.
Maar één club hoeft zich te melden voor Riquelme

De interesse in Juan Román Riquelme zal alleen maar zijn gestegen na zijn twee wonderschone doelpunten voor Argentinië in het WK-kwalificatieduel met Bolivia (3-0). Toch is maar één club kansrijk de nummer tien over te nemen.
Riquelme wil enkel en alleen terug naar Boca Juniors, de club van zijn hart uit Buenos Aires. 'Ik ga weer spelen voor Boca', zei de schuchtere spelmaker na de zege op Bolivia. 'Ik weet niet wanneer het zover is. Dat kan zijn binnen een paar maanden, maar ook als mijn contract afloopt in 2009.'
Met vier doelpunten is Riquelme uitstekend op schot voor zijn land in de drie kwalificatieduels tot nog toe. Hij spot met wetten als wedstrijdritme. Riquelme wordt niet ingezet dit seizoen door Villarreal. Coach Manuel Pellegrini verwijt hem het teambelang te schaden.

Bovendien is de druk bij Lanús minder groot omdat men ook bij verlies tegen Boca en winst van Tigre de titel niet verloren heeft. Wel scherp blijven, Joey. Ik gaf al meteen aan dat ik daar al vrij snel geen last meer van heb. 
Lanús is overigens kampioen. Voor het eerst in de clubgeschiedenis en dat met een jonge ploeg en veel spelers uit de eigen jeugd. In de winter vindt er zeer waarschijnlijk alvast een kleine leegloop plaats.

Ik ben erg gecharmeerd van Valeri. Ik heb hier ook nog eventjes een rapport geplaatst van hem, maar dat staat er nu niet meer. Nee, totaal niet. Palacio speelt veel dieper en is door en door een aanvaller. Valeri is wat slimmer en kan ook als een middenvelder denken. Valeri speelt ook aan de buitenkant in een 4-4-2 systeem, wat nogal een verschil maakt ten opzichte van Palacio, die vanuit Palermo speelt en diep gepositioneerd van flank naar flank wisselt.

Was zeker niet slecht, vaak zijn die wedstrijden op lagere niveau's niet om aan te zien maar dit was goed. Misschien speelt het mee dat je al gauw laat meeslepen door zo'n ambiance.joey schreef:Mag je wel zeggen, ja. Was de wedstrijd ook aardig?
Hoop voor zo'n club als San Martin dat ze gaan promoveren al is dat maar afwachten met die rare constructies van de competities in Argentinië.

Toekomstige topper? Ik betwijfel het. Escudero doet qua beweeglijkheid en door de mogelijkheid om hem overal in de aanval op te stellen wel enigszins denken aan Tevez. Z'n spel ziet er iets gepolijster uit, maar hij heeft een veel minder krachtig bovenlichaam en weet zich minder makkelijk slim vrij te spelen voor de goal. Het is wel een jongen met zelfkritiek en wilskracht, dus hij zal wel in de subtop terecht komen.
