Ajax Cape Town

  • Josep Ngake

Bar gezellig/heel gezellig/vreselijk gezellig/onwijs gezellig.

Ajax expelled from league; club boss says it's a plot
October 7, 2003

Ajax Cape Town have been expelled from the Super League for failing to wear the Toyota-sponsored kit.

The club was informed in a letter from SAFA Western Province secretary Allan Apollis on Friday.

SAFA WP executive member and assistant secretary Martin Neewat announced at Friday's Coca-Cola semi-finals at Nyanga that Chelsea were the Super League champions. Chelsea would have finished second to Ajax if points were not deducted from the Parow club.

According to SAFA Western Province rules a club will be expelled if it is found guilty of the same charge three times.

Two weeks ago ago Ajax had six points deducted from their league log after they were found guilty by the association's disciplinary committee for not wearing the kit in games against Wolves and Square Hill.

Last week Ajax were found guilty again when their home game against Central did not take place because the teams' colours clashed.

Ajax used their regular kit, but put the name of the league sponsor on the back in an attempt to comply with the rules. This was apparently not acceptable to SAFA WP.

The matter was sent to the disciplinary committee and it was expected that Ajax would win the case because visiting teams are supposed to wear different colours.

The committee, however, found Ajax guilty of not using the kit provided by the association which, it said, would have avoided a clash of colours.

Provincial president Vernon Seymour said SAFA WP would soon issue a statement.

Ajax will appeal against the decision through the soccer channels. The club said the rules of the competition had not been presented to them at the start of the season and these had been made up as the season continued.

Ajax chief executive John Comitis said the club would also take legal action.

In a letter sent to SAFA WP regarding the clash of colours against Central, Ajax football administration manager Eric Dalton said: "According to SAFA WP rules, the visiting team must change.

"The game should be awarded to us and a score of 3-0 as per the constitution recorded in our favour.

"If the decision does not go in our favour, we would go to our legal advisers and seek the necessary relief via the courts."
He said it was "blatantly obvious that forces within SAFA WP are conspiring against us".

Comitis said Ajax had no problem adding the Toyota logo to their jerseys

:xyxthumbs:
Hey Ajax Fans, Howzit Going?
08/10/03

Ajax Amsterdam star Steven Pienaar will be featuring in a regular bi-weekly column on the www.ajaxct.com website, and in the first of the series today, he talks about his early years and his time in Cape Town with the Urban Warriors....

It’s Schilla in the house straight from Amsterdam. I’m gonna be dropping by every two weeks or so to share a bit about my life over here in Holland with you the fans of a club that is, and will always be, very close to my heart.

You know not a day goes by when I don’t look around this beautiful city of the lowlands and give thanks to the path my life has taken. With the help of God I am really living a dream. As a youngster playing street soccer with my buddies in Westbury it was not in my wildest dreams that I thought I would one day be playing for a world famous club like Ajax Amsterdam and rubbing shoulders - not to mention exchanging crunching tackles - with some of the best players in the world in the Champions League.

On those evenings after school we would kick a ball around on the dusty streets until well after dark. We played for nothing else but the love of the game and the joy of having a tatty leather ball glued to our feet.

Later I started playing for various clubs in the area; clubs with exotic names like Argentinos, Arsenals and West Ham. We used to play in the Chappies League savouring the highs of winning and the anguish of losing always as a team. After our Saturday matches we would get together and watch games on television shouting for Orlando Pirates, Newcastle United or Barcelona. Teammates from those days - Harvey, Gadget - you know who you are - remain some of my closest friends.

Something else that immediately springs to mind when I find myself dreaming of my childhood soccer career is the image of my mother at all my games, lending support and shouting encouragement. You know she hardly ever missed a game and it is largely because of her that I am what I am today.

Another person who played a big role in my early development was a school teacher of mine named Mr Malgas. Ja, you know Mr Malgas gave me a lot of guidance and advice that I really appreciate.

From life at these junior clubs I moved to the School of Excellence where soccer became far more serious. Here we began learning about tactics, formations and discipline on and off the field. Fellow pupils at the school were all supremely talented players and I began to realize that if I was going to make it in the game I would have work harder and harder to keep up with these guys.

I then signed professional papers and moved to Cape Town to join Ajax. Man I thought I was in heaven. For the first time in my life I saw what professional soccer was all about. You know the facilities at Ajax Cape Town are comparable to any in Europe. They are absolutely fantastic. World class! The club is just so professional in everything it does. And let me tell you when you get that kind of support from a club you learn to give it back tenfold; to live and die for the cause so to speak. You give 100% in everything you do, you approach the sport in a very meticulous way, and, most importantly you learn to live like a true professional away from the field as well.

At Ajax Cape Town I was also part of an incredible group of players. We were one big happy family with an 'all for one, one for all' attitude. Many of us lived together, trained together and hung out together. The camaraderie was really special and it is something I often find myself thinking about.

Ja, all these thoughts of my life in South Africa often enter my head as I relax at home in Amsterdam or travel on the team bus to games. The sport of soccer has been very good to me and I am truly blessed. But as a parting shot to all those youngsters back in South Africa who dream of making it as a professional footballer, I urge all of you to always put education before sport, to always give 100% in everything you do and most importantly to believe in yourself.

Shot man, till next time,

Schilla

Alle problemen lijken weer opgelost, en Ajax Cape Town speelde afgelopen week uit tegen SuperSport United. De Feyenoord - Ajax van Zuid Afrika.

Ajax Climb Up To Second
Ajax Cape Town kept the pressure on log leaders Kaizer Chiefs with a 1-0 victory over a lacklustre SuperSport United at a hot Loftus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The game got off to an open start with both teams enjoying their fair share of possession in the early stages.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts after some sloppy defending by Ajax allowed Seuntjie Motlhajwa to shoot, but his attempted lob just went over the crossbar - to the relief of Ajax keeper Moeneeb Josephs.

Dillon Sheppard, who had just come as a substitute, made an immediate impact in the 17th minute when he played a one-two with Wilfred Mugeyi inside the SuperSport United box, but keeper Calvin Marlin pulled off a great save to deny his former teammate.

Sheppard continued throughout the half to create problems for the SuperSport defence on the left hand flank, while Josep Ngake did the same down the right flank.

By this stage Ajax were starting to dominate possession, while SuperSport relied on fast breaks to counter-attack. One such break by Chris Mwamba in the 28th minute nearly lead to Abram Raselemame getting on the end of a cross, but his effort flew into the side netting.

Themba Mnguni should have put the home side up in the 31st minute when a perfectly flighted free kick fell onto his head, but he was not able to keep his header under the cross-bar.

Both teams continued to push forward in search of the opening goal, but neither side was able to find the back of the net by the time the referee blew the whistle for half time.

Mnguni has another chance to score from a corner in the early minutes of the second stanza, but once again his header was off target.

This miss proved to be costly as Ajax moved the ball quickly down the field.

The ball fell to Tsholola Tshinyama, who made a strong run through the heart of the SuperSport defence, before finishing with a well taken left-footed volley.

Ajax were unlucky not to increase their lead a few minutes later when Wilfred Mugeyi headed home after Cyrille Kitambala had headed the ball across goal, but the ball was adjudged to have gone over the dead ball line before the DRC player made contact.

Moeneeb Josephs was then called into action when a speculative cross-cum-shot from Raselemame nearly caught him out, but the Ajax keeper recovered just in time to push the ball over the bar.

Ajax then again came close to scoring when Sheppard crossed to Ngake, whose flick header managed to hit the bar before rebounding into SuperSport keeper Grant Johnson's hands. (Johnson had come on as a substitute after Calvin Marlin had picked up a hamstring injury).

In the 79th minute a SuperSport corner fell to Phil Evans, but he was not able to keep his volley on target.

A minute later substitute Daniel Matsau also had a chance to equalise, but the former Hellenic striker rushed his shot.

Josephs was again called into action when a Pitso Lekone cross was deflected towards his goal, but the Ajax keeper reacted well enough to deny Matsatsantsa their final chance.

The result sees the Urban Warriors move up into joint second position, while SuperSport United remain in 11th position.

SuperSport United - Ajax Cape Town 0-1
Tsholola Tshinyama

Ajax thrash Stars to go top

Ajax Cape Town signalled their intentions as serious title contenders when they scored a convincing 4-0 victory over Premier Soccer League newcomers Silver Stars at Newlands Stadium on Wednesday evening.

With Chiefs losing 1-0 to SuperSport United at Ellis Park, the result sees the Cape team going back to the top of the table.

Ajax kept their best soccer for the second half, only managing to score once in the first period.

The goal came from Ajax's Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) defender Cyrille Mubiala in the 12th minute, when he did well to guide Brett Evans' free-kick into the goal.

The visitors had a good chance to level matters in the 32nd minute, but home 'keeper Moeneeb Josephs was on hand to stop Jokhonia Cibi's back-heeled effort.

The small band of loyal Ajax supporters were made to wait until the 70th minute before their team scored again — Mubiala's DRC team-mate Mulekelayi Kanku doing the business this time around after he did well to run onto a through ball and beat 'keeper Johannes Diale.

Urban Warriors' left-back Brett Evans then made sure of the result with a well-struck free-kick in the 81st minute to increase his side's lead to three.

Dillon Sheppard then rubbed salt into the wounds of Stars with a well-taken goal in the 83rd minute.

The result sends the Polekwane team into the relegation zone after failing to win any PSL matches this season, though ironically they are flying high in the Coca-Cola Cup, having just reached the semifinal stage after beating Moroka Swallows.

Santos beat Ajax in Cape Town derby

Kaizer Chiefs retained their top position on the PSL log when Santos beat Ajax 1-0 in their local derby in Cape Town tonight. The win puts Santos level with Ajax, two points behind Chiefs. The goal came in the 24th minute from Tyrone Arendse.

Playing with a gale-force south-easter at their backs Santos went onto the attack early and in the second minute Duran Francis put over a cross and Arendse's shot was blocked by Moneeb Josephs. The ball deflected back to Arendse who headed just past the far-upright. Shortly after, Josephs needed treatment for four minutes after the ball hit him in the guts.

Ajax adjusted to the strong wind and in the 11th minute Bradley August took a free kick from 35m out, but his powerful shot flew wide. Santos opened the score in the 24th minute when Marawan Bantam put over a long ball from the left to the far right over the heads of the defenders to Arendse who cut in and his shot easily beat Josephs.

Dylan Shepherd was brought on in the 30th minute for Ashley Opperman which added life to the Ajax attack. In the 33rd minute Shepherd crossed to Anele Zibi who centered to Wilfred Mugeyi who fluffed a good chance to level the scores. Ajax had the ball in the net in the 61st minute when Mougeyi's header went home, but the assistant ref ruled him offside.

A double-sub was made by Santos in the 33rd minute when Jean Marc-Ithier and Sebsations Bax were brought on, but Ithier was injured 12 minutes later. Ajax controlled the second half but could not penetrtate a solid Santos defence in which Edries Burton and Musa Ongao were outstanding as well as goalkeeper Brandon Wardle who was voted man of the match. Ajax were guilty of some poor shooting. In the 80th minute Bantam lobbed the ball which just went over the bar with Josephs well out his goal. Two minutes earlier Josephs ran to the halfway line to get to the ball just before David Notoane. - Sapa
