Hello folks,

I was in Lisbon for a few (very nice) days, but I'm back now - and I just published a Roger match report. Check it out for some background info on our new man...

Man of the Match against Vitesse.

Beautiful footballer: he's got style and intelligence (and great skill).

Awesome performance.

I think Steef is having a little bit of fun with that remark.

Richard Witschge never came close to fulfilling expectations. He should have been a top player, but his suspect attitude prevented him from being so.

Roger's cv is hardly that of a top player ...... Barca -> Espanyol -> Villareal-> Ajax ...........however can't say I will be complaining if he continues to perform as he has in the last couple of matches.

No, I just think he's a carbon copy of Richard Witschge the player.

Still not sure whether you think that's a good or a bad thing (I know you hate Witschge as a person, but no idea how you rate him as a player), but I, for one, have very fond memories of Richard Witschge. I thought he was very fickle, inconsistent and sometimes annoying during his first spell as an Ajacied (until he left for Barcelona in 1991), but after his return (wasn't it in 1996...?) he was invariable one of Ajax's best. He even worked his balls off in most games. Too bad he returned at the start of some very grim years for the club, but I loved him as a player in those years.

It would be better if he was remembered as a great number 10 and a european cup winner ............... didn't happen for Richard, but it should have.

I think that Ajax should start to talk about Garcia's new contract. He has - as far as I remember - a one-year deal, so it will be very sad to see him leaving for free...

He's slow, he doesn't tackle, he doen't follow his man, he never leads by example.

And he has a great left foot.

Hence, RiWi is back.

And you may have liked RiWi in his second stint, but he was terrible for the team. Always only looking for his own performance to be somewhat satisfying to the fans. The Ariel Ortega-syndrome.

He's sick or something atm, maybe Vertonghen?

Although Steef is right, i would still give him the benefit of the doubt, i mean our whole midfield was utter shit in the last game, lets see if he wakes up.

I do fancy Maduro coming back by the way

Why would Ten Cate replace Roger with Maduro when Maduro has been playing so poorly in the last few months?

Good question.

Roger was crap against Roda, but almost the entire team was shit over there. Roger has played well in recent weeks and he scored a couple of goals, too. I really don't see why he's a point of discussion at the moment... Of course he must play. The 'Vitesse line-up' must remain intact for the time being. Too bad for those who are not in it (including Maduro).

maduro needed a rest, he had been playing and training with AJAX and various ORANJE squads almost continously since early 2005 without a break

besides, the future does not rest with roger and he isn't really much of a defensive midfielder

According to Voetbal International Roger will not make the trip to South Africa. The midfielder picked up an injury against Vitesse (minor muscular tear) and is currently recovering in Spain. He will stay in Amsterdam when the rest of the team goes to Cape Town.

Roger has now recovered from his persistent muscular injuries and he has been in training with the team for about one week now. Yesterday evening he returned to competitive action with Young Ajax, in their home game against Young Sparta. He played 45 minutes. More info about the Young Ajax game in the Young Ajax thread...
