Re: Former Ajax Players
I still think he's a decent defender. But not suitable for the Ajax game. Having to defend with 60 meters behind you, means running and being agile. His stature doesn't help him. In Torino I think he plays in a 3man defense, a more static type, which is better for him. The same goes for Botman. He's definitely a very good player, but could be really exposed in an Ajax/City/Arsenal type of game. Still, do we have a resale percentage?
May the Force be with you
Re: Former Ajax Players
I think Alvarez plays on the right side when he is paired with Timber. Schuurs came on several times last year and played on the left side replacing Martinez. In retrospect, letting Schuurs go was a wrong decision.SPL schreef: wo feb 15, 2023 9:43 pm I see Torino want 50m for Schuurs and Manu and Liverpool fancy him. Ideally we wanted a left footed defender to replace Martinez but under Heitinga Alvarez has played CD and he is right footed. Thus Schuurs could easily have played with Timber

Re: Former Ajax Players
Viktor Fischer has retired at age 29. He was immensely talented but suffered a serious hamstring injury in 2014 that forced him to miss almost an entire season. He never had the explosiveness after that and moved on from Ajax to several other clubs.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Sad to see Fischer retire. He had immense potential, but like Orange14 said, he was never the same player after he came back from that injury.
Re: Former Ajax Players
Wow is Daley Blind having a very fine season with Girona. The central defender is starting every match and his team is atop La Liga having defeated Barca yesterday, 4-2.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Donny van de Beek joins Girona ,Blind and Misehouy an Ajax trio. All the best Donny who made a bad error in joining Manu.
Although July 8th is Monday it was this Saturday 7 years ago Donny's best mate Appie collapsed. I will post on Monday I still feel so very sad.

Re: Former Ajax Players
My least favourite club is Manu, yes I rate them as bad as Feyenoord and PSV .So with Onana Antony and Martinez there I can cope with that but now de Ligt and Mazraoui are signing .How depressing. No feelings for Mazraoui or Onana as both walked out for nothing but de Ligt playing there is simply dreadful .
Re: Former Ajax Players
Johan Neeskens sadly died age 73 .One of our greats from that wonderful side of 71 to 73.Wonderful comments from British fans on BBC. I quoted yesterday the Ajax side of 1971 to 73 were the best team ever but one has to put the Oranje side of 1974 WC up there with magic football.Neeskens a star of both teams.
Not much footy on Tv those days but Cruijff and Neeskens and co just blew us fans of the English game away with their Total football.
RIP Johan and thanks for your part in making this 73 year old englishman fall in love with your beautiful Ajax.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Ajax Legends playing Real Madrid legends in the Arena on Sunday. Lovely article on Showtime with Jari Litmanen . That 1995 side played great wonderful football and any fans would have been proud had that been their team. We Ajax fans are spoilt we had Cruijff and that team of the 70's simply still are the best football side ever.
Re: Former Ajax Players
The Legends game was entertaining, and it was good to see some of the famous players suit up once again. Ajax won 2-1 with goals from Arveladze and Siem de Jong. Madrid got a goal right as time ran out. The visitors were hamstrung by a very short bench and many of their players had last than 20 first team matches with the club. Seedorf played the first half for Ajax and the second for Madrid. Most amazing performance had to be Simon Tahamata, who at 68 years of age, still has great speed. van der Vaart is still excellent with the ball but like Snjeider is 5kg over weight. Litmanen looked good and Frank de Boer played the full 90 minutes. van der Sar and Stekelenburg split the GK.

Re: Former Ajax Players
I just watched the highlights ,great to see so many of our old players .Would like to have seen Bergkemp and Davids there and evidently some old stars did not attend.
A great occasion and a packed Arena. A special day but then again Ajax is a special club.

Re: Former Ajax Players
I meant to add a lovely moment on 34 mins a tribute to Appie and the cameras focused on his family . Still very special to see and hear .
Re: Former Ajax Players
Watched the 1st half and bits of the 2nd. Lovely atmosphere and loved seeing some old faces.
Re: Former Ajax Players
When will they ever learn? It appears that Gabriel Misehouy's experience in the Spanish league is coming to an end. His management team is exploring a transfer to Anderlecht.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Former youth MF, Viktor Jensen is doing quite well at Utrecht. He scored last night as they won their first playoff match to qualify for the group phase of the Europa League. I always liked him at Ajax but he was as good as Kenneth Taylor which is why he was sold on.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Ex youth Daishawn Redan ,who left aged 16 for Chelsea and back in August joined Lommel has gone missing but is in rehab in Thailand ,addicted to nitrous oxide and seems to have lost all his money and home. Very sad but leaving to go abroad at 16 in never wise and wish UEFA and FIFA banned it . Brexit means English clubs cannot sign kids until 18.
Re: Former Ajax Players
Well and truly off topic but I watched the first half of an AFC Champions’ League match featuring Al Ittihad, with our old mate Steven Bergwijn in the starting lineup.
Talk about depressing, the players barely looked like they were interested and there was basically no one in the stands. No sign of any tactics or teamwork, just individual players taking turns to try and walk the ball through the defense.
Must be depressing for the players too but I suppose they have chosen to take the cash while they can.

Re: Former Ajax Players
Zinhagel a MF nearly 17 debuted for Feyenoord yesterday and Grootfaam just 16 a sub . Both left Ajax as we would not give them contracts at 15.Zinhagel left in 2024 although he was a Sparta boy,Grootfaam last summer. They are the best talents at that club .
Hope we give Elgyn Hato a contract as being 15 and coming from Sparta Feyenoord will try and make him an offer. Dont agree with contracts at 15 but for real talents we must give them.
